How to Fix Blurry YouTube Thumbnails (Step-by-Step)

A blurry thumbnail kills CTR before viewers read your title. Whether you are uploading a soft export or downloading a low-res grab from a competitor tool, this guide fixes the usual causes—and shows how to pull the sharpest frame YouTube still hosts.

First: is the blur on upload or download?

• Upload blur: Your file is below 1280×720, over-compressed, or upscaled from a tiny image.
• Download blur: You grabbed “default” or “medium” instead of Max Res / HQ. Many grabber sites only show the soft version.

Fix blurry uploads (your own videos)

1. Export at least 1280×720 (16:9). Prefer 1920×1080 if your editor allows, then keep file size under 2MB. Details in our size guide.
2. Use JPG for photos or PNG for sharp text/graphics. Avoid screenshots of screenshots.
